NEGROS OCCIDENTAL GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB, INC.
Many local golfers, when ask about notable aspects of Negros Occidental Golf & Country Club, Inc. would perhaps promptly stress its main challenge as a very windy course. Some have exaggeratedly described winds gale force, but one in bound to amplify impressions especially on a course where a short par 3 seems so far away, unreachable by irons when the wind blows against his face.
Negros Occidental Golf & Country Club, Inc. that scenic layout three kilometers away from Bacolod City proper and backgrounded by the well known mountains that explain away its former name the Marapara Golf & Country Club, Inc. has assumed a major role in western Visayas golf since the old Bacolod Golf & Country Club then closer to the city, was transferred to Binitin in Murcia. NOGCC proximity to city golfers is a local answer.
Although basically flat, this par 70 layout on 40 hectares of the club’s 70 always poses an interesting round, contrived smartly by man. But often nature joins the picture. On windy days, NOGCC exacts torment with its howling winds.
Amateur golf champion Luis Silverio is credited with the early conceptions of winding fairways, enlarged water hazards some of which formerly had been called water bunkers guarding some greens, hills – hillocks and mounds delineating fairways and strategic fairway bunkers. All these features combine to make NOGCC today an accepted championship course by distance challenge.
The greens are planed to the famous Egyptian Bermuda grass, a kind of turf that was introduce early in 1965 and that has turn out to be well adapted to local weather. Today the NOGCC greens are in fine condition. The fairways are mostly winding and doglegged, an accepted resort for tricking a flat terrain which this former sugar plantation was. Some of these fairways are so tight; one has to think out his shot most of the time.
The first hole is a short dogleg right par 4 which exacts accuracy from the tee for a clear view of the well trapped green. The impact zone is structured with high mounds and bunkers that await the stray shot, and the out of bounds perimeter to the right compounds challenge. An ambitious cut through the right must be perfect to reap dividends for the gamble.
While doglegs and well wrought features are hallmarks of good designing at NOGCC, its par 3 turn’s into veritable monster on windy rounds. A short hole with wind blowing against the shotmaker, but which normally demands a short iron at 150 yards would incredibly call for a 5 woods. For Bacolod golfers this has become an asset in tourneys set in similar venues. Here, they excel with the expertise gained at wind swept NOGCC.
NOGCC’s first organizers put into play marketing strategy of devoting resources to the course first, completing the clubhouse later. It paid dividends as investor saw the wisdom in priorities, and the new club saw fruition in the early 70’s. Today it is a popular membership course with facilities like outdoor swimming pool. The clubhouse is as attractive modern building where one can avail of all his golfing needs.
